Supporting Teens Through Life Transitions and Emotional Growth

As children and adolescents grow, they are constantly in the process of developing the social and emotional skills necessary to lead healthy, happy lives. When teens experience emotions that are difficult to manage, they may benefit from meeting with a therapist or counselor. Parents and their teen often attend therapy sessions together, as therapy can be a safe and educational space in which to address the thoughts, feelings, and emotions experienced by all members.

During teenage stages of life, adolescents become more independent and begin to form new identities alongside their peers and friends, engaging in new and often experimental behaviors during their teen years. Additionally, physical, hormonal, and emotional changes may bring about new transitions and experiences for teens and their families. These life-stage changes and transitions may lead to difficulties at school or home, experiences of anxiety and depression, or strained parent-child relationships. Additionally, transitions in family life, such as new siblings, a change of living location, loss of a family member, divorce, remarriage, or trauma may also produce stress for teens. Behaviors and emotions may become stuck, heightened, or problematic. Therapy may offer a safe environment for your teen and your family to express thoughts, emotions, concerns, and needs to develop effective coping and communication strategies to move through life’s difficulties together and individually with healing and growth.
